How have you been involved with changemaking efforts at UE?
I have been a part of changemaking at UE since United Sound became a ChangeLab course during my freshman year. Every day I see change created by United Sound. As I work behind the scenes, I understand the importance of creating positive change in our community. These changes not only help others but warm your own heart as well.
Tell us about the changemaking projects or ChangeLab(s) you are part of.
I am a part of the ChangeLab course called United Sound. United Sound gives people in the community with special needs or disabilities a chance to learn music and perform with a UE ensemble. I began as a mentor, then took on the role of Activities Coordinator, then became Vice President. Now I serve as the UE United Sound President. Through this experience I have gained an immense amount of patience, responsibility, and confidence, and I am overall a better person because of United Sound. This year, our organization doubled in size, and we were able to purchase additional instruments to accommodate more musicians. I could not be more proud of this organization.
What would you tell a student considering UE because of changemaking? How would you recommend they pursue this?
If you like changemaking, UE has something for you. This University prides itself on making a difference, and I can promise you that is what they do. The Center for Innovation & Change staff is incredible. If you have a vision, they will see it too, and they will put in their best efforts to make it happen. Be open and talk to them about getting involved! There are so many ChangeLabs you can get involved with.
